The mini-detente friendship of P-Thugg (Patrick Gemayel), of Arabic heritage, and Dave 1 (David Macklovitch), a Jew, blossomed when they were mere pups in Montreal, where they learned to dress sharp and create “cheesy electro-funk” (according to All Music Guide) filled with groovy, dance-floor-dominating hooks. The funk brothers tear it up with keyboard-heavy cuts like “Fancy Footwork” and “Tenderoni,” and hilarious melodies like what their very own bio calls “the autobiographical Jew-boy ballad ‘Momma’s Boy.’”
They’ve been compared to the ‘80s sound of Hall & Oates, Klymaxx and Sylvester, and actually teamed up with Daryl Hall in 2008, appearing on a segment of his Internet show, Live From Daryl’s House. That led to their booking together for this year’s Bonnaroo Festival. With two studio albums under their shiny belts--2004’s She’s in Control and 2007’s Fancy Footwork--they’re getting ready to drop a new one this summer. Dave, meanwhile, is earning his doctorate in French literature at Columbia University, where he teaches the language to undoubtedly funkified undergrads.
