Between his growing wine business and all the fun he’s been having with his anything-goes side project, Puscifer, Maynard James Keenan has no doubt caused more than a few fans to worry whether they’d ever see him focusing his potent muse again on the vehicle that first put him on the map: Tool. Well, if word earlier this year that Tool guitarist and co-founder Adam Jones and the rest of the band were already at work writing the music for a new album wasn’t enough to put those fears to rest, seeing Keenan and Co. in all their glory at Lollapalooza will. That’s right — Tool is back. When the follow-up to 2006’s chart-topping 10,000 Days will be unleashed remains a mystery, but rest assured that the band’s dense, dark and brooding but often surprisingly melodic prog-metal — as first heard on 1992’s Opiate EP and honed to perfection on multi-platinum releases like ’93’s Undertow, ’96’s Aenima and 2001’s Lateralus — will be on epic display at Lollapalooza, just as it was when the band last headlined the festival in 1997.
