Of course it’s no accident that Cypress Hill chose April 20 to release their first album in six years, Rise Up. The L.A. rappers are as much noted for their commitment to cannabis (whose users well know what 4/20 means), as they are for developing a stoner-funk style of delivery that influenced everyone from Dr. Dre to British trip-hoppers. Also lauded as the first Latino rap superstars, Cypress Hill has sold more than 18 million albums since their maiden release, 1991’s multi-platinum Cypress Hill.
Their new album, their first under the Snoop Dogg regime at Priority Records, features the rock-rap mix members B-Real (Louis Freese), Sen Dog (Senen Reyes) and DJ Muggs (Lawrence Muggerud) first explored on 2000’s Skull & Bones. Guitarist Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine, the Nightwatchman, Street Sweeper Social Club) set the tone by playing on (and producing) the title track; other guests include Pitbull, Marc Anthony, Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda and Slash. Always a hot live draw, the trio will definitely be bringing along touring member Eric Bobo.
